Meet Megan Rankin of Nectar Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Rankin.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was about six years old, trekking around Yosemite with my pops.

He had his old Minolta film camera (complete with a rainbow strap around his neck and very short shorts on his bod. VERY short shorts — think Tom Selleck in Magnum, P.I. — This was the 1980’s, people).

I loved everything about the vacation we were on: camping in the valley was my jam and the tent trailer we stayed in was bomb. It was like a 1970’s plaid wonderland of adventure.

I really wanted to relish in and capture what I felt. I wanted something that would bring back the smell of the dewy grass early in the morning and the thrill I got when I looked up to see Half Dome peering over us.

I asked my dad to help me take a picture and he did. We squatted down in the grass together and took some shots. He walked me through the settings and the angles. I got a complete high knowing I was capturing a moment in time that would last forever.

That moment captivated me and I am still as passionate about photography today.

I returned from this vacation and began my work as a photographer in a very elegant way: by taking pictures of my Barbie dolls.

I then went on to do bigger and greater things, like making my friends pose for me in front of bed sheet backdrops I hung up with clamps from my dad’s garage.
